Show your support as they travel to the State Tournament in Syracuse on April 5-6.

Our Middle School Science Olympiad team placed third a the Regional Tournament on March 2 and qualified for the State Tournament in Syracuse on April 5-6. This will be the team’s sixth consecutive year at States in its seven years of existence.

The team is coached by community volunteers and PHS students under the direction of Drs. Martha and Charles Matteo.

Come meet professionals in STEM-Related careers and find out how they followed their passions to their current positions. This event is free and all are welcome to attend.

Pleasantville Friends of STEM Programs: Our first goal is to identify and support extended learning programs that will challenge and excite students, while encouraging learning through hands-on experience.

Elementary School (2014 – Present) in collaboration with the BRS administration, a number of different programs were introduced as after school offerings:
LEGO League program: For grades 1-4, 8 week after school programs that expose students to engineering and problem solving using Legos.
STEM After School Enrichment: In a partnership with the MS and BRS PTA, introduced 7 new STEM After School Enrichment classes including: Web Coding, SCRATCH, Stop Motion Animation, DaVinci Engineering Workshop, Curious Engineers, and Comic Book Workshop.

Pleasantville Middle School (2012 – Present) in collaboration with the Pleasantville Middle School, three programs were established, with involvement of well over 100 students:
-Science Olympiad (grades 6-8; www.soinc.org)
-Math Olympiad (grades 5-6; 7-8; www.coems.org)
-FIRST Lego League Robotics (grades 6-8; www.USFirst.org)
Expertise for these programs has depended to date upon an army of STEM-savvy volunteers – retirees, parents, and community members, who coach students in their challenges and in preparation for Regional and State competitions.

Pleasantville High School (2015- Present)
-STEM Career Fair: twenty local STEM professionals shared their career path stories with eager students in a lively exchange. The next STEM Career Fair is planned for Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Pleasantville High School.
-New student internships and research program opportunities with local technology-based institutions, were identified as a result of the STEM Career Fair.
-Science Olympiad Team: Students have organized the first high school division Science Olympiad team.

Mission:
From its inception in 2012, our mission has been to: “promote a sustainable pipeline of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) – savvy students, Kindergarten through 12th grade, in collaboration with the Pleasantville School District and broader community.”

The process skills and knowledge students acquire through the STEM programs will carry them well into the future. Pleasantville Friends of STEM, Inc. is a recognized partner of the Pleasantville School District and has been included in strategy and planning discussions for several years.

Your company’s gift program will help us to maintain and expand program offerings by offsetting costs, e.g., for coach training, field trips, educational materials, equipment and speakers, as allowed by law.
